Selamawit Zewdu
Selamawit Zewdu makes crochet clothing by hand in Bahir Dar. Every kaftan, hoodie, poncho and baby set begins as a ball of yarn and a single hook, and becomes something you can wear to church, to a wedding or on the flight home.
In her words
I make every piece myself, one stitch at a time.
i. The colours speak for themselves. Green, gold and red are the colours of Meskel bonfires, Timkat crowds and New Year's morning, and I love setting them on cream, black, white and grey so they shine. For children I reach for sunflowers and adey abeba, the yellow flowers that open across the country at New Year.
ii. Crochet cannot be rushed. That is why many pieces are made to order: I make yours in your size and your colours, and send it the moment it is finished.
iii. Whether you are in Addis Ababa, in the USA or in Europe, I want you to feel proud when you put it on.
